Read-Aloud and Round Table Discussion: The Pearl Chapter 3 pp. 36-40
Discussion Questions: Why does Kino fear everyone? Who do you think was trying to steal the pearl? Why does Juana want to throw away the pearl? Why does Kino disagree? What would you do? Why?
Group Session: We will conduct our round table/mini-socratic session. Today as we read, we will complete a round table and mini-socratic seminar for The Pearl. Using the Depth of Knowledge Chart as our guide, we will discuss the major themes of The Pearl as a group. For each positive contribution to the discussion, you will receive one point. For each negative contribution (calling out, using foul language, putting your head down, not paying attention, using a put down, etc…) you will lose one point. We will stop the read aloud at the appropriate marker and Ms. Mueller will pose the question and keep score. Winners with the highest number of points at the end of the class will get the highest participation grade and a prize on Friday!
Early Finishers: Students will work with their group members to come up with definitions for one of two literary elements: plot or conflict. On scrap paper, they will write a definition for their assigned literary element, as well as examples of it found in previous readings of The Pearl.
