Remember to consult the “Common Literary Elements” chart and your accompanying pamphlets as we read and work.

Read-Aloud: The Pearl Chapter 3 pp. 26-28

Discussion Questions: 

Why does the priest visit Kino and his family? 

Why does the doctor visit? 

Why is Kino “already making a hard skin for himself against the world”? Why is he on the lookout for danger or an attack?

Vocabulary:

Group Session - 2 day lesson continued from yesterday. Please see attached standards and AIM.

Read Aloud: Pages 28-30

Assignment #19: Work with your group members to make

inferences and predictions about the threats and dangers 

that Kino faces now that he has found the Pearl of the World. 

Brainstorm the benefits that Kino now has because of his 

pearl. Once both the benefits and the risks have been 

outlined, write a paragraph arguing whether or not having a 

large sum of money is a good or bad thing. 

Summary/Closing

Share your responses during a whole class discussion, referring to your paragraphs for support or reasons.

1. Who do you think is the greatest threat to Kino?  Why?

Aim: How can we create profiles to better understand Steinbeck’s use of characterization in The Pearl?

Objective  Students will be able to:

• Determine important information about the characters in The Pearl.
• Make inferences about the characters in The Pearl.
• Cite textual evidence to support their inferences.
• Draw conclusions about the importance of characterization in The Pearl and in literature.

Whole Class

Remember to consult the “Common Literary Elements” chart and their accompanying pamphlets as they read and work.

Read-Aloud: The Pearl Chapter 3 pp. 30-36

Discussion Questions: What kind of person is the doctor?  What power does he have over Kino and Juana?  What does Kino suspect the doctor did to Coyotito?  What is meant by the following statement: “luck… brings bitter friends”?  Do you agree with this statement?  Why or why not?

Vocabulary: writhe – to twist or squirm in pain or struggle

Group Session

Assignment #20: Students will work with their group members to create profiles for one of the following characters: Kino, Juana, the priest, the doctor, and Juan Tomas and Apolonia.  They will use both facts from the text and their own inferences to compile information about their characters’ physical traits, personality traits, and motivations, using textual evidence when necessary.

Summary/Closing

Students will share the inferences and textual evidence they compiled about their chosen characters during a whole class discussion.  They will then discuss the importance of characterization in The Pearl and literature in general.

BOOK PARTY DAY!

Today, your book projects are due! Please make sure they are shared with me as of this moment!

Do Now: Take a seat in the circle and complete assignment #20 using The Pearl as your guide.



MINGLE ACTIVITY: We will all stand in the middle of the circle and sing the "mingle" song. When the song stops, find a specified number of partners and discuss your book. 

Some points you want to discuss:

1. What did you love about your book?
2. Why do you recommend (or not recommend) the book?
3. What type of reader would enjoy this book and why?
4. What do you plan on reading next and why?







CLOSING: We will create a "must read" list of favorite books to put in the class and refer to.
