cost and what is the benefit of generosity?
2. Do you consider yourself a "lucky" person? Why or why
not? Can you reflect on who you are and how luck played a

notebook. Once we decide on a single definition, we will put

Discussion Questions: Why does everyone follow Juana to
the doctor? What does that say about their neighbors? How
does the doctor live compared to Kino? What does Kino feel
before and after speaking to the servant? Why do you think
the servant closes the gate in shame?
Work Period: There are a number of literary elements that
appear in literature and in "The Pearl". A good way to
remember these literary elements and keep track of them is
to create a small pamphlet that will be referred to and
updated each time we locate one in the novella. Let's create
it together now. Include the following words in your
pamphlet:

Assignment #17: Students will work with their group members to come up
with specific examples that show the economic status and cultural status of
both Kino and the doctor. They should use the indicators compiled during
the do now for guidance. For each example, students must provide textual
evidence from The Pearl that shows it or can be used to infer it. Each piece
of textual evidence must be accompanied by a page number.

Students will share their examples and accompanying textual evidence
during a whole class discussion. They will then use these examples to make
inferences about Kino’s and the doctor’s personalities.
